Minneapolis does White Burgundies & Domestic Pinot Noir

Edina Country Club

Sunday, May 31

Six of us gathered for this intimate event at the Edina Country Club.  Once again the food, wine and conversation was second to none and the wines showed really well.

Starter Wine

NV Mionetto Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

A nice starter wine that featured lemon, mineral and grapefruit characters.  A nice summer wine for a hot day.  86 points

White Burgundies

2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains

Medium gold that really showed great form at this point.  A vibrant nose that featured shells, lemon, straw, grapefruit and minerals.  A medium, concentrated finish and a real value for under $30 on sale.  90 points

2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots

Not as colorful as the Montmains and many of us believed this wine to be in a closed phase.  I had it back in February and it showed so much more so I will be cellaring the remaining bottle for a while.  Not much fruit emerging from the glass and it featured shells, chalk and straw.  Previously I gave it 93 points but tonight a 90 point score was in order.  The Montmain won this battle.  90 points

2000 Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne

Wow!  Nice dark gold color with intense aromas of orange peal, chalk, pineapple and stone.  The palate was delicious and featured shells, orange peal, chalk and a nutty quality.  Medium finish and very balanced.  It is drinking really well right now!  My wine of the night by a nose.  94 points

Domestic Pinot Noir

2005 Martenelli Three Sisters Vineyard Sea Ridge Meadow Pinot Noir

Medium purple that featured strawberry, oak, vanilla and cherries on the nose.  A fruit dominated wine on the palate and showed good acidity and was balanced.  I really enjoyed this wine and believe it has some nice ageing potential.  92 points

2006 Littorai Summa Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Medium purple and a nose of cherry, strawberries and raspberries.  If you like fruit this is an amazing wine.  Super smooth finish and great acidity.  My second favorite wine of the night.  94 points

2005 J Rochioli Little Hill Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Medium purple.  Aromas of cherry, cola, strawberry and spice.  Classic Russian River Valley profile.  It was well balance and paired perfectly with my grilled Salmon.  92 points

2005 Kistler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Medium color with strawberry, mineral and raspberry.  The fruit was very present here and I did not get much earth quality to the wine.  It had a solid medium finish and was

balanced.  92 points

Dessert Wine

1996 Chateau Doisy-Daene Barsac

Amber color with golden apples, honey and good minerality.  A concentrated finish that paired well with my fruit pie dessert.  91 points

A great night and thanks to John for the amazing stemware at the Country Club.  It is rare that you don't need to bring your own!
