Twin Cities Wine Tasting with John Glas of Wineglas

Minneapolis Does Australian Shiraz

Six of us gathered at the Edina Country Club and it was a rocking time!  I love the private room and the glassware is refreshing for the Twin Cities as no need to bring a bunch of stems.  It was enjoyable to see the evolution of the wines over the night with the smaller group.  Thanks to everyone for attending!

The Minneapolis Wine Club is the number one option in town!

The wines:

Starter Wine

2007 Leasingham Magnus Clare Valley Riesling

Color:  Light gold

Nose:  Clean with mineral, orange peal and floral

Taste:  Floral, mineral, orange peal

Finish:  Medium and a clean, satisfying finish

Evaluation:  This is one of the best under $10 I have tasted 90 points

2004 Schlid Estate Barossa Valley Shiraz

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Charcoal, blackberries, violets, black pepper, very fragrent

Taste: Floral, blackberries, spices, smoke

Finish:  Multi layered wine with a solid, medium finish

Evaluation:  Tasted over the course of the night and original score of 92 but changed to 94 points

2004 De Lisio "Krystina" McLaren Vale Shiraz

Color:  Black

Nose:  Intense coffee, charcoal, licorice, crushed rock

Taste:  Wow!  Crushed rock, charcoal, smoke, violets

Finish:  Long with serious intensity and super balanced

Evaluation:  Tied for wine of the night.  This is a classic wine 95 points

2003 Greenock Creek Alices Barossa Valley Shiraz

Color:  Black

Nose:  blackberries, prunes, licorice, violets

Taste:  Violets, crushed rock, charcoal, mineral, black pepper

Finish:  Dominated by earth tones and really changed over the night.  Super concentration

Evaluation:  This wine might have been the best at the tasting and only time will tell 94+ points

2005 Kaesler "Bogan" Barossa Valley Shiraz

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Raspberries, violets, crushed rock, lacked the intensity of the others

Taste:  Smooth wine overall with raspberries, eucalyptus, blackberries

Finish:  Medium and good acidity

Evaluation:  A light style in comparison to the other wines.   This lack the power of the 03 vintage. 92 points

2005 Mitolo GAM McLaren Vale Shiraz

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Raspberries, charcoal, smoke, graphite

Taste:  Minerals, blackberries, violets, smoke

Finish:  Light overall with good acidity

Evaluation:  Not sure the future of this wine 91 points

2003 Tim Smith Barossa Valley Shiraz

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Floral, licorice, crushed rock

Taste:  Crushed rock, violets, raspberries, blackberries, mineral

Finish:  Well integrated and balanced.  This wine is much softer then previous samplings and I would say at this point consume.

Evaluation:  If you are an Aussie Shiraz drinker and have not tried Tim Smith then you need to seek Tim's wines out.  95 points

For me I would give the edge to the De Lisio tonight.  Tim Smith was served last so we did not get to see if evolve as some of the other wines.  A great event and I look forward to the next one.
